Abstract
A method to treat or prevent retroviral infection by administering a novel conjugate is described. Lucifer Yellow and its analogs are conjugated to compounds having carbonyl functional groups for reaction with the semicarbazide moiety of Lucifer Yellow to obtain the semicarbazone conjugate.

A method to inhibit viral proliferation in cells infected with retrovirus which method comprises contacting said cells with a conjugate of the formula:
- ##STR8## wherein R has the formula:
- ##STR9## in which Z represents one or two non-interfering substituents;
- and wherein R.sup.1 is H or alkyl (1-6C);
- and aryl (6-10C) containing 2-5 such aryl groups, said alkyl or aryl substituents being unsubstituted or substituted by 1-2 non-interfering groups;
- or the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.

- ##STR12## wherein R has the formula:
- ##STR13## in which Z represents one or two non-interfering substituents, and wherein R.sup.1 is H or alkyl (1-6C) and
- R.sup.2 is alkyl (1-6C) or aryl (6-10C) containing 2-5 such aryl groups, said alkyl or aryl substituents being unsubstituted or substituted by 1-2 non-interfering groups;
- and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
