Control apparatus and method for progressive fracture of workpieces

A method of shearing a workpiece from a material sheet in a press having a movable ram reciprocatingly controlled by a fluid-operated pressurizable cylinder, comprising the steps of:

• advancing the ram from a normally open, retracted position toward the workpiece;
• measuring the distance travelled by the ram;
• stopping the advance of the ram at a first predetermined distance in the thickness of the material sheet, the distance being less than the total thickness of the material sheet;
• relieving the pressure on the press due to the pressurized advance of the ram by retracting the ram from the first predetermined stop distance by a second predetermined distance, the second predetermined distance being less than the distance of the preceding advance of the ram into the material sheet;
• advancing the ram from the second predetermined distance through the total material thickness to separate the workpiece from the material sheet;
• and
• retracting the ram to the open, retracted position.

A method of shearing a workpiece from a material sheet in a press having a movable ram reciprocatingly controlled by a fluid-operated pressurizable cylinder comprising the steps of:

• (a) pressurizing the cylinder at a first pressure when the ram is at a normal, open position retracted from the material sheet;
• (b) pressurizing the cylinder to a second higher pressure;
• (c) actuating the cylinder to accelerate the ram toward the material sheet;
• (d) decelerating the ram before the ram contacts the material sheet;
• (e) pressurizing the cylinder to a third higher pressure;
• (f) advancing the ram through the material sheet to a first predetermined distance within the thickness of the part, less than the total thickness of the material sheet;
• (g) retracting the ram from the first distance by a predetermined distance;
• (h) advancing the ram a second predetermined distance completely through the thickness of the material sheet;
• (i) dwelling a predetermined time at the second predetermined distance;
• (j) pressurizing the cylinder to the second pressure;
• and
• (k) retracting the cylinder and ram from the part to the normally open, retracted position.

A method of shearing a workpiece from a material sheet in a press having a movable ram reciprocatingly controlled by a fluid-operated pressurizable cylinder, comprising the steps of:

• pressurizing the cylinder at a first pressure for advancing the ram toward the workpiece;
• advancing the ram from a normally open, retracted position toward the workpiece;
• measuring the distance travelled by the ram;
• pressurizing the cylinder at a second higher pressure to advance the ram at a second higher pressure through the material sheet;
• stopping the advance of the ram at a first predetermined distance in the thickness of the material sheet, the distance being less than the total thickness of the material sheet;
• relieving the pressure on the press due to he pressurized advance of the ram;
• advancing the ram from the first predetermined distance through the total material thickness to separate the workpiece from the material sheet;
• pressurizing the cylinder at the first pressure;
• and
• retracting the ram to the open, retracted position.

A method for removing material from a sheet of material with a press having a movable upper platen, a stationary lower platen, and a cutting tool secured to the upper platen, the method comprising the steps of:

• establishing a first reference point at the surface of the material with the cutting tool;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool away from the cover platen a predetermined distance to a second reference point once the first reference point is established;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool toward the lower platen the predetermined distance plus a first predetermined percentage of the thickness of the material to displace material to be cut with the cutting tool;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool away from the lower platen another predetermined distance;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool toward the lower platen and another predetermined distance plus a second predetermined percentage of the thickness of the material to displace material to be cut with the cutting tool;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool away from the lower platen another predetermined distance;
• and
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool toward the lower platen the another predetermined distance plus a third predetermined percentage of the thickness of the material to exceed the yield strength of the material to be cut with the cutting tool and removing the material being cut away from the remainder of the material.

A method for removing material from a sheet of material with a press having a movable upper platen, a stationary lower platen, and a cutting tool secured to the upper platen, the method comprising the steps of:

• establishing a first reference point at the surface of the material with the cutting tool;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool away from the lower platen a predetermined distance to a second reference point once the first reference point is established;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool toward the lower platen the predetermined distance plus a first predetermined percentage of the thickness of the material to displace material to be cut with the cutting tool;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool away from the lower platen to the second reference point;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool toward the lower platen the predetermined distance plus a second predetermined percentage of the thickness of the material to displace material to be cut with the cutting tool;
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool away from the lower platen to the second reference point;
• and
• moving the upper platen and cutting tool toward the lower platen the predetermined distance plus a third predetermined percentage of the thickness of the material to exceed the yield strength of the material to be cut with the cutting tool and removing the material being cut away from the remainder of the material.
