Abstract
Disclosed is a method of selecting a relatively high reliability signal path between a mobile communication unit and a number of possible base sites.
Claims2
In an RF signalling environment a method of selecting a high reliability signal path between a receiver within a communication unit and a plurality of transmitters, each transmitting an information signal from a base site, based upon a comparison of measured delay spreads and average signal quality factors calculated from measured signal parameters with delay spreads and parameters received from at least some of the plurality of base site transmitters, such method including the steps of:
- A) measuring a delay spread and calculating a signal quality factor from measured signal parameters of a first information signals received from a first transmitter of the plurality of base site transmitters;
- B) determining a first link margin based upon the measured delay spread and the signal quality factor of the first information signal;
- C) measuring a delay spread and calculating a signal quality factor from measured signal parameters of an at least second information signal received from an at least second transmitter of the plurality of base site transmitters;
- D) determining an at least second link margin based upon measured delay spread and the signal quality factor of the at least second information signal;
- and,
- E) selecting a high reliability signal path based, at least in part, upon the largest relative link margin.
In an RF signalling environment an apparatus for selecting a high reliability signal path between a receiver within a communication unit and a plurality of transmitters, each transmitting an information signal from a base site, based upon a comparison of measured delay spreads and average signal quality factors calculated from measured signal parameters with delay spreads and parameters received from at least some of the plurality of base site transmitters, such apparatus comprising
- A) means for measuring a delay spread and calculating a signal quality factor from measured signal parameters of a first information signals received from a first transmitter of the plurality of base site transmitters;
- B) means for determining a first link margin based upon the measured delay spread and the signal quality factor of the first information signal;
- C) means for measuring a delay spread and calculating a signal quality factor from measured signal parameters of an at least second information signal received from an at least second transmitter of the plurality of base site transmitters;
- D) means for determining an at least second link margin based upon measured delay spread and the signal quality factor of the at least second information signal;
- and,
- E) means for selecting a high reliability signal path based, at least in part, upon the largest relative link margin.
