Abstract
An improved process for the production of linear alternating polymers of carbon monoxide and at least one ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon employs a novel catalyst composition formed from a compound of palladium, the anion of a strong non-hydrohalogenic acid and a novel hexakis phosphine ligand. The process is characterized by a lessened degree of reactor fouling.
Claims11
In the process of producing a linear alternating polymer of carbon monoxide and at least one ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon by contacting the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon under polymerization conditions in the presence of a reaction diluent and a catalytic quantity of a catalyst composition formed from a compound of palladium, the anion of a strong non-hydrohalogenic acid and a phosphine ligand, the improvement wherein the ligand is a hexakis phosphine ligand of the formula ##STR2## wherein C.sub.6 represents a benzene ring, R' independently is hydrogen or lower alkyl, and R independently is alkoxyphenyl wherein at least one alkoxy group is substituted on an aromatic ring carbon atom which is ortho to the carbon atom through which the R is connected to phosphorus.
In the process of producing a linear alternating terpolymer of carbon monoxide, ethylene and propylene under polymerization conditions in the presence of a reaction diluent and a catalytic quantity of a catalyst composition formed from palladium acetate, the anion of trifluoroacetic acid and a phosphine ligand, the improvement wherein the ligand is a hexakis phosphine of the formula ##STR4## wherein C.sub.6 represents a benzene ring, R' independently is hydrogen or lower alkyl, and R independently is alkoxyphenyl wherein at least one alkoxy group is substituted on an aromatic ring carbon atom which is ortho to the carbon atom through which the R is connected to phosphorus.
