Fenamic acid hydroxamate derivatives having cyclooxygenase and 5-lipoxygenase inhibition

A compound of the formula (I) ##STR73## and pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof;

• (1) wherein R.sub.1 is (i) ##STR74## (ii) ##STR75## wherein R.sub.6 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl of from three to ten carbons having three to seven ring carbons;
• R.sub.7 is H, lower alkyl, or acyl, and R.sub.8 is H or lower alkyl or (iii) as defined together with R.sub.2 below;
• (2) R.sub.2 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, or taken together with R.sub.1 is ##STR76## wherein L.sub.1 is H.sub.2 or oxygen;
• and R.sub.7 is independently as defined above;
• (3) R.sub.5 and R.sub.11 are independently H, fluoro, chloro, bromo, trifluoromethyl, lower alkyl, CN, hydroxy, lower alkoxy, --S(O).sub.n -lower alkyl wherein n is an integer or 0 through 2, NO.sub.2, or NR.sub.9 R.sub.10 wherein R.sub.9 or R.sub.10 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl, or acyl;
• and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are fluoro, chloro, bromo, trifluoromethyl, or lower alkyl;
• with a proviso that when R.sub.1 is ##STR77## then R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 cannot both be lower alkyl when R.sub.5 is hydrogen, and when R.sub.1 is ##STR78## wherein R.sub.7 is hydrogen or lower alkyl and one of R.sub.3 or R.sub.4 is lower alkyl then R.sub.5 cannot be meta-nitro, meta-difluoromethyl, or meta-trifluoromethyl when R.sub.11 is H, Br, Cl, or nitro.
