New antibacterial 6-amido-1-methylcarbapenems and process for their synthesis involving new azetidinone intermediates.

A compound of the structural formula:
- ##STR13## wherein R.sub.1 /R.sub.2 is H/CH.sub.3 or CH.sub.3 /H and P is hydrogen or a nitrogen-protecting group removable by acid or basic hydrolysis, catalytic hydrogenation, or oxidative cleavage.
A compound of the formula:
- ##STR14## wherein R.sub.1 /R.sub.2 is H/CH.sub.3 or CH.sub.3 /H and P is hydrogen or a nitrogen-protecting group removable by acid or basic hydrolysis, catalytic hydrogenation, or oxidative cleavage.
