Abstract
A method and a device are disclosed wherein a shrinkable polymer material is formed in situ in a mold without defects and with no internal stresses. A monomer or polymer solution is injected into the mold and solidified sequentially through the mold by exposure to an agent such as ultraviolet radiation, with simultaneous addition of monomer or polymer solution into the area of the mold not yet exposed to the solidifying agent. By controlling the rate at which the solidifying agent is moved across the mold and the monomer or polymer solution is injected into the mold, the resulting product completely fills the mold and is stressfree.
Claims7
A method of forming an article of precise dimensions by solidification in a precisely dimensioned mold of a liquefied material comprising at least one monomer, prepolymer or polymer, that, upon exposure to a solidifying source of electromagnetic radiation, shrinks;
- the method comprising the steps of:
- a. providing a mold body having a first part and a second part, said first and second parts defining an internal cavity therebetween, the cavity corresponding to the precise dimensions of the finished article and having a closed end and an open end, at least one of said first or the second parts formed to permit exposure of the liquefied material to the electromagnetic source in the internal cavity in a differential and sequential manner;
- b. providing the electromagnetic source for imposition through a focusing gate upon the surface of the liquefied material to the electromagnetic source in the internal cavity in a differential and sequential manner;
- c. providing a source of the liquefied material at said open end of said mold body;
- d. filling the internal cavity with the liquefied material;
- e. differentially exposing said liquefied material to said electromagnetic source through the focusing gate by moving the source relative to the mold body starting at said closed end and proceeding to the open end while continuously supplying liquefied material to said open end so that polymerization takes place at a controlled rate from the closed end to the open end;
- and
- f. removing the resultant solidified article from the cavity.
A method of polymerization of a reaction mixture within a precisely dimensioned mold to form an article by imposition of a form of energy on the reaction mixture, the method comprising the following steps:
- a. providing a mold body of at least two parts and having at least a portion thereof permeable to the form of energy, the mold defining an internal cavity having a closed first end and a second end, said cavity conforming to the outer dimensions of the article, and the mold body further defining a gate at said second end of said internal cavity;
- b. providing a source of the form of energy for permeating a defined localized area of the permeable portion of the mold body;
- c. providing a source of reaction mixture capable of being polymerized by the imposition of a form of energy;
- d. filling the internal cavity with the reaction mixture;
- e. differentially exposing said reaction mixture, by localized portions through a focusing gate, to the one form of energy starting at the first end of said internal cavity and proceeding on a timed sequence basis to the second, gated end whereby the reaction mixture is polymerized from the first end to the second, gated end at a controlled rate;
- and
- f. removing the resultant polymerized article from the cavity.
