Fabric treatment composition and the preparation thereof

A fabric treatment composition comprising:

• (1) water;
• (2) from 1 to 75% by weight of one or more amphoteric compounds which compounds are substantially water insoluble in that the solubility of the compound when measure in water at a pH of 2.5 and at a temperature of 20.degree. C. is less than 10 g/l and which compounds are selected from the group consisting of:
• I ampholytes of the following formula:
• ##STR10## II hydrocarbyl betaines of the following formula:
• ##STR11## III hydrocarbylamino betaines of the following formula:
• ##STR12## IV gliycinates or propionates of the following formula:
• ##STR13## V tertiary amine oxides of the following formula:
• ##STR14## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are C.sub.8 -C.sub.25 hydrocarbyl chains
• R.sub.1 ' is C.sub.16 -C.sub.50 hydrocarbyl chain
• R.sub.2 ' and R.sub.3 are hydrocarbyl groups containing 1-4 carbons or a group --(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n H;
• R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 are --(CH.sub.2)n;
• n is an integer from 1-6;
• and
• X is SO.sub.3 --, SO.sub.4 2-- or COO--;
• and
• (3) a second compound selected from the groups consisting of water soluble cationic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, amine oxides and mixtures thereof and wherein the compound or mixture of compounds have an HLB of between 10.0 and 12.0;
• the weight ratio of the amphoteric compound (2) to the second compound (3) being from 5:1 to 50:1.
