An apparatus for and a method of addressing data storage elements (16) employs an ionizable gas to address the storage elements for storing data in and reading data out of them. The storage elements are defined by the overlapping areas of multiple column electrode (18) extending in a common direction on a first substrate (48) and multiple channels (20) extending in a common direction on a second substrate (54). A layer of dielectric material (46) separates the first and the second substrates, which are positioned face-to-face and spaced-apart with the direction of the channels transverse to that of the column electrodes. Each of the channels is filled with an ionizable gas and includes a reference potential electrode and a row electrode electrically isolated from each other. The ionizable gas functions as an electrical switch that changes between a conducting or plasma state and a nonconducting or nonionized state in response to an applied signal, and functions to either store data in or read data out of the storage elements.
In an addressable electro-optic system having multiple light pattern data storage elements comprised of an electro-optic material and arranged in an array on a surface, the storage elements being electrically responsive to data drive and data strobe circuits that provide respective data drive and data strobe signals to form an image on the surface at the location of the storage element, a switching element for selecting and storing data across the electro-optic material at the location of an element, comprising:
An addressable electro-optic system having multiple light pattern data storage elements, comprising:
An addressable electro-optic display device, comprising a first substrate supporting on a major surface thereof plural first electrical conductors that extend along the surface in a common direction;
A method of addressing a storage element for optical data, the storage element including a layer of materials having electro-optic properties, comprising:
A method of applying a variable value electrical potential representing a datum to a data storage element, comprising:
An addressing structure for an analog data storage element, comprising:
A method of changing a property of light incident to a data storage element to which an electrical potential representing a datum is applied, comprising:
A method of applying a variable value electrical potential representing a datum to, and storing the datum in, a data storage element, comprising:
An addressing structure for a data storage element to which an electrical potential representing a datum is applied to change a property of light incident thereto, comprising:
