Abstract
An abrasive compact is provided which has a plurality of recesses which may take the form of grooves or holes formed in a major surface thereof. The recesses contain no solid material and serve as crack arrester formations.

An abrasive compact which has major surfaces on each of opposite sides thereof and a plurality of recesses formed in one of the major surfaces thereon which provides a cutting means, the recesses being less than 0.5 mm in width and containing no solid material, wherein the cutting means are a cutting edge or point.
