Diaphragm construction

A diaphragm, comprising:

• a plug means having an upper and a lower plug that define a channel therebetween;
• a bonding layer secured to said plug means to form a base, said bonding layer also being received and retained in said channel between said upper and lower plugs;
• a resilient material secured to said base;
• and
• a cylindrical sleeve that encircles said resilient material and said base, and is secured to said resilient material.

A fluid-handling device, comprising:

• a housing which includes a front wall and a cylindrical inner surface closed off at one end by said front wall;
• an elongated resilient diaphragm encircled by said cylindrical inner surface, such that said diaphragm is spaced away from said front wall, wherein said diaphragm is comprised of a plug, a tire cord bonding layer, an elastomer and a cylindrical sleeve;
• means for attaching said diaphragm to said cylindrical inner surface;
• a reciprocating means having a head portion which is embedded in said diaphragm;
• wherein said diaphragm and said front wall define a chamber therebetween, a fluid inlet to said chamber being defined in said housing;
• and
• wherein said diaphragm deforms to vary the volume of said chamber responsive to axial reciprocation of said reciprocating means.
