A membrane/electrode combination comprising:

an ion exchange membrane having a plurality of catalytically active particles bonded to at least one face of the membrane in an interconnected roadway pattern, wherein said interconnected roadway pattern is an open, clearly defined, geometrically regular pattern which leaves portions of the membrane uncoated and exposed.
