Abstract
Light-polarizing films or sheets, preferably based on vinyl alcohol homopolymers or copolymers contain dyestuffs of the formula ##STR1## in which X and Y have the meanings given in the description.

Light-polarizing films or sheets containing dyestuffs which, in the form of the free acid, conform to the formula
- in which
- X signifies --CN, --CF.sub.3, halogen, R.sup.1 CONH--, --COOH, --CONH.sub.2, --CONHR.sup.1, --CONR.sup.1 R.sup.2, --COOR.sup.1, --OH, --OR:, --O--CO--R.sup.1, --N.dbd.N--Y.sup.1, or a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic radical,
- R.sup.1, R.sup.2 signify alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, which may be interrupted by O and/or S, and
- Y, Y.sup.1 signify a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or heterocyclic radical.
