Claims19
A liquid crystal composition comprising at least one compound represented by each of the following general formulae I, II and III:
- ##STR33## wherein R.sup.1 to R.sup.3 represent each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, an optionally substituted cycloalkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxy group or a halogen atom;
- and A represents a ##STR34## group;
- ##STR35## wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 represent each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, an optionally substituted cycloalkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxy group or a halogen atom;
- and ##STR36## wherein R.sup.6 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, an optionally substituted cycloalkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxy group or a halogen atom;
- and R.sup.7 represents a hydrogen atom or a ##STR37## group wherein R.sup.8 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, an optionally substituted cycloalkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxy group or a halogen atom.

A display element comprising a liquid crystal composition charged between electrode bases at least one of which is a transparent, wherein said liquid crystal composition comprises at least one compound represented by each of the following general formulae I, II and III:
- ##STR51## wherein R.sup.1 to R.sup.3 represent each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, an optionally substituted cycloalkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxy group or a halogen atom;
- and A represents a ##STR52## group;
- ##STR53## wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 represent each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, an optionally substituted cycloalkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxy group or a halogen atom;
- and ##STR54## wherein R.sup.6 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, an optionally substituted cycloalkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxy group or a halogen atom;
- and R.sup.7 represents a hydrogen atom or a ##STR55## group wherein R.sup.8 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, an optionally substituted cycloalkyl, an alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxy group or a halogen atom.
