Abstract
Subject a heated, non-molten, intimate admixture of a base metal and a superconducting oxide material to pressure sufficient to form a densified article. The densified article is either superconducting as formed or capable of being rendered superconducting by annealing in the presence of oxygen. Depending upon the choice of materials the densified article is stable at temperatures up to 1000.degree. C.
Claims25
A method for preparing a superconducting ceramic-metal composite article comprising:
- a. heating an admixture of a superconducting oxide and a metal to a temperature which is high enough to allow the admixture to be densified under pressure to more than about 80 percent of the admixture's theoretical density but low enough to substantially preclude melting of the admixture or any of its components and minimize adverse reactions between the superconducting oxide and the metal;
- and
- b. subjecting said heated admixture to a pressure in excess of 15,000 pounds per square inch (103 megapascals) for a period of time sufficient to form a densified article having a density of greater than about 80% of the admixture's theoretical density.
