Abstract
A structure for attenuating explosive shock waves to prevent propogation of accidental explosions by sympathetic detonation of adjacent explosives comprising bidirectionally symmetric layers of material of consecutively increasing or decreasing acoustic impedance laminated about a center layer. The structure may be made by combining several materials, as in consecutive layers of aluminum, plastic, and a rigid foam surrounding on both sides a layer of steel; or, two material, as in a center layer of Kevlar.TM. surrounded on both faces with layers of plastic. The plies comprising the layer of Kevlar.TM. are canted with respect to the plastic layers.
Claims5
A laminated structure for attenuating explosive shock waves, comprising a rigid flat center layer having two opposite flat outer faces and a plurality of rigid flat sheets symmetrically layered from each outer face in bidirectionally identical layers of monotonically graduated acoustic impedance from the center layer, wherein the layers comprise a center layer of steel surrounded on both outer faces by successive layers of aluminum, plastic, and rigid foam.
A laminated structure for attenuating explosive shock waves, comprising a rigid flat center layer having two opposite flat outer faces and a plurality of rigid flat sheets symmetrically layered from each outer face in bidirectionally identical layers of monotonically graduated acoustic impedance from the center layer, wherein the layers comprise a center layer of steel surrounded on both outer faces by successive layers of aluminum, plastic, and cork.
A missile, comprising:
- (a) a rocket motor;
- (b) a warhead;
- (c) a laminated structure comprising a rigid flat center layer having two opposite flat outer faces and a plurality of rigid flat sheets symmetrically layered from each outer face in bidirectionally identical layers of monotonically graduated acoustic impedance from the center layer, wherein the laminated structure is disposed inside the missile between the warhead and the rocket motor so that the laminated structure blocks any fragment from an exploding rocket motor or warhead from striking the other;
- and
- (d) wherein the laminated structure layers comprise a center layer of steel surrounded on both outer faces by successive layers of aluminum, plastic, and rigid foam.
