Abstract
A method for use in drying particulate matter employing a drier comprising a cylindrical upper section, a frustoconical lower section, a rotatable shaft extending substantially the entire length of the interior of the drier, a plurality of axially spaced arrays of circumferentially spaced, radially extending stirring arms appended to the shaft, and at least two perforated frustoconical separators mounted within the drier in fixed, inverse and spaced apart relation to each other, and means for introducing a heated gas into the drier for contacting and drying the particulate matter, the stirring arms and separators cooperating to retard agglomeration of the particulate matter.
Claims21
A method for drying particulate matter, said method comprising the steps of:
- introducing said particulate matter into a vessel having a vertically disposed substantially cylindrical upper section and a frustoconical lower section, said vessel further comprising a coaxially disposed rotatable shaft extending downwardly through said vessel for substantially the entire length of said vessel;
- a plurality of axially spaced arrays of circumferentially spaced, radially extending, downwardly inclined stirring arms connected to said shaft;
- and a plurality of coaxially disposed, perforated frustoconical separators mounted in fixed relation to said vessel and inversely to each other so as to permit said particulate matter to flow downwardly through said vessel, said separators cooperating with said stirring arms to retard agglomeration of said particulate matter within said vessel;
- introducing relatively dry, heated gas into the lower section of said vessel in an amount ranging from about 60 to about 90 cubic feet per pound of particulate matter in such manner that said gas is distributed over substantially the entire cross-sectional area of said vessel and directed upwardly through said vessel;
- contacting said downwardly flowing particulate matter with said upwardly directed heated gas while agitating said particulate matter by rotating said shaft;
- discharging said particulate through an outlet disposed in the lower section of said vessel;
- recovering said heated gas through an outlet in the top of said vessel;
- filtering entrained particulate matter from said recovered gas;
- condensing water vapor from said recovered gas;
- drying said recovered gas;
- reheating said recovered gas;
- and
- recirculating said reheated gas to said vessel.
A method for drying particulate matter comprising a major portion of polyethylene terephthalate, said method comprising the steps of:
- introducing said particulate matter into the top portion of a drier having a rotatable shaft with stirring arms attached to said shaft, and flow separators within said drier adapted to distribute the flow of said particulate matter as said particulate matter flows downwardly through said drier;
- introducing into the bottom portion of said drier a gas heated to a temperature between about 340 degrees F. and about 385.degree. F., at a dew point ranging between about -30 degrees F. and about -60 degrees F., at a rate ranging from about 60 to about 90 cubic feet of heated gas per pound of particulate matter;
- contacting said particulate matter with said gas within said drier while rotating said shaft;
- discharging said gas from the top portion of said drier after said gas has contacted said particulate matter;
- and
- recovering said particulate matter from said drier.
