Abstract
A magnetic information storage medium, such as a floppy or rigid magnetic disk having a plurality of indelible grooves inscribed on a surface of the medium to function as optical servo tracks. The grooves can be in the form of a plurality of continuous or noncontinuous concentric circles. The grooves can also be a continuous spiral or a plurality of continuous concentric circles having non-constant widths and/or depths.
Claims17
An information storage medium comprising:
- a magnetic medium for use in a disk drive of a computer;
- and
- a plurality of optical servo tracks positioned on a surface of the magnetic medium and comprising a plurality of equally spaced concentric rings formed as depressed areas in a magnetic layer of the magnetic medium;
- and
- a plurality of magnetic data storage areas that contrast optically with the optical servo tracks and with at least one of said magnetic data storage areas existing between each pair of adjacent optical servo tracks.
2 more elements
An information storage medium comprising:
- a thin cylindrical piece of a flexible magnetic medium for use in a disk drive of a computer;
- and
- a plurality of optical servo tracks positioned on a surface of the flexible magnetic medium and comprising a plurality of equally spaced, continuous, concentric grooves formed as indentations in a magnetic layer of said flexible magnetic medium, said grooves having a depth of less than approximately two microns, a width of less than approximately five microns and with a spacing of less than approximately thirty microns existing between adjacent grooves.
