Abstract
Zeolite particles retaining silver ions having bacteriostatic properties on their ion-exchangeable sites in an amount up to 41% of the zeolite's exchange capacity are described.
Claims5
A bacteriocidal zeolite particle retaining silver metal ions having bacteriocidal properties at ion-exchangeable sites of the zeolite in an amount up to 41% of the ion exchange capacity of the zeolite, the zeolite having a specific surface area of at least 150 m.sup.2 /g, based upon anhydrous zeolite as the standard, and an SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 mol ratio of at most 14.
A process of preparing a bacteriocidal zeolite particle having a specific surface area of at least 150 m.sup.2 /g, based upon anhydrous zeolite as the standard, and an SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 mol ratio of at most 14, the process comprising contacting the particle with a solution of a water soluble silver salt the silver ion of which has bacteriocidal properties thereby exchanging with the silver ion from the solution, provided that a concentration of the silver salt in the solution is sufficiently low to prevent deposition of silver compounds onto the zeolite and wherein the contacting is repeated until up to 41% of the ion exchange capacity of the zeolite is reached.
