Abstract
A method of producing 3-alkanoyloxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acids, which are useful as antibiotics or as intermediates in the synthesis of antibiotics, by reacting a 3-hydroxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid with a saturated fatty acid anhydride in an aqueous medium in the presence of an acid-acceptor base and a 4-(tertiary amino)pyridine.

A method of producing a 3-alkanoyloxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid which comprises reacting a 3-hydroxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid with a compound of the formula:
- ##STR7## wherein R.sup.3 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms in an aqueous medium in the presence of a tri-C.sub.1-6 -alkylamino or cyclic tertiary amine and a 4-(tertiary amino)pyridine.
