Fatty acid leukotriene synthesis inhibitors

A method for the treatment of allergic reactions or inflammatory disorders in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal a pharmaceutical composition which comprises a combination of a pharmaceutically-acceptable diluent or carrier and a fatty acid compound of the following formula (I):

• ##STR13## wherein A is --CH.sub.2 --, alkylidene, 1-alkylalkylidene, --CR.sup.6 .dbd.CR.sup.7 --, or --C.tbd.C--;
• Y is --COOH, alkoxycarbonyl, --CONH.sub.2, --CONHOH, N-alkylcarboxamido or N,N-dialkylcarboxamido;
• R.sup.1 is hydroxy, mercapto, acetoxy, acetylthio, alkoxy, alkylthio or halo;
• R.sup.2 is hydrogen or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 taken together are carbonyl, --O(CH.sub.2).sub.2 O-- or --O(CH.sub.2).sub.3 O--;
• R.sup.3 is alkyl, alkoxy, --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --alkaryl, --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --alkoxyaryl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --aryl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --alkaryl or --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --alkoxyaryl;
• R.sup.4 is hydrogen or alkyl;
• R.sup.5 is hydrogen or alkyl;
• R.sup.6 is hydrogen or alkyl;
• R.sup.7 is hydrogen or alkyl;
• k is the integer 2-7;
• m is the integer 0-4;
• n is the integer 1-6;
• and
• when Y is --COOH, the pharmaceutically-acceptable base addition salts thereof.
