Calibration of read timing, write timing and focus is accomplished automatically by comparing reflectance signals. The timing or focus settings are preferably modified, and signals are again compared under the modified adjustment settings. The read timing adjustment includes comparing signals from mark positions immediately preceding and immediately following an isolated mark and adjusting read delay to achieve small or minimum differences between the signals at the mark positions immediately preceding and immediately following the isolated mark bit position. Focus calibration is accomplished by comparing the value of the signal from a mark with the value from a mark position immediately adjacent the mark and adjusting the focus offset until a larger maximum difference between the two signals is achieved. The write timing calibration is preferably achieved by causing the write circuitry to emit a low-power light beam in the vicinity of an unwritten mark position and adjusting the write timing delay circuitry until a low or minimum signal, i.e. high reflectance, is achieved at a desired mark position.
A method for adjusting the timing of data extraction from a read signal in an optical disk system comprising:
A method for calibrating the focus of an optical beam in an optical disk system having a controllable focus system and at least one mark having a center written on the disk comprising:
A method for obtaining timing calibration of a write pulse to within a minimum tolerance with respect to timing of a read circuit in an optical disk system, comprising:
A method of conducting read, focus and write calibration in an optical disk system for reading and recording marks along a circumferential path comprising:
A method for automatically calibrating an adjustable calibration point for at least one of a read clock delay, a write clock delay, and an adjustable focus in an optical disk system having a disk for reading and recording marks at a plurality of mark positions, said calibration occurring after substantially each activation of the system and prior to each initial access of the system by the user, the method comprising:
Apparatus for adjusting the timing of data extraction from a read signal in an optical disk system comprising:
Apparatus for focusing light onto an optical disk having at least one mark having a center written thereon comprising:
Apparatus for obtaining timing calibration of a write pulse to within a minimum tolerance with respect to timing of a read circuit in an optical disk system comprising:
