Abstract
An olefin when reacted with sulfur and phosphorus pentasulfide provides an effective antiwear additive agent for lubricant oils.
Claims17
A lubricant composition consisting of a major proportion of an oil of lubricating viscosity or grease prepared therefrom and a minor antiwear amount of the reaction product (1) of a C.sub.2 to about a C.sub.32 olefin, (2) free elemental sulfur with added H.sub.2 S and (3) phosphorus pentasulfide, produced by reacting the olefin and the sulfur in a molar ratio of from about 1:2 to about 2:1, to about 0.1 to 1 mole of phosphorus pentasulfide.
An antiwear lubricant additive product derived from a process consisting of reacting (1) free elemental sulfur with added H.sub.2 S, (2) a C.sub.2 to about a C.sub.32 olefin and (3) P.sub.2 S.sub.5 at temperatures of from about 50.degree. to about 150.degree. C., under autogenous pressure in molar ratios of olefin to sulfur of from 1:2 to about 2:1, to 0.1 to 1 mole of P.sub.2 S.sub.5.
