Abstract
The invention resides in a novel photochemical process for the production of .alpha.-aryl propionic acids by the subjection of a solution in an organic solvent of the corresponding .alpha.-haloaryl alkyl ketones to irradiation with light having a wavelength of from 200 to 800 nm, preferably in the presence of a suitable acid scavenger for the neutralization of any hydrohalogen acid generated during the reaction.
Claims11
A process for the photochemical production of an .alpha.-aryl propionic acid of the general formula:
- ##STR6## wherein X is a radical of the structure:
- ##STR7## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, sec-butyl, isobutyl, tert-butyl, n-amyl, isoamyl, chloro, methoxy and phenyl and R' is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and halogen which comprises subjecting an .alpha.-haloaryl alkyl ketone of the general formula:
- ##STR8## wherein X has the meanings stated above to irradiation with light having a wavelength of from 200 to 800 nm in the presence of an anhydrous or aqueous organic solvent at a temperature from 0.degree. C. to the boiling point of the solvent.
