Abstract
A method of decontaminating solid material consisting of removing organic hazardous waste from contaminated solid material with an aqueous ammonia solution. The resulting aqueous ammonia solution containing organic hazardous waste is further processed to isolate the organic hazardous waste in a small volume for disposal. Solid material such as soil so treated can be returned to the excavation site without further processing.
Claims30
A method for decontaminating solid material contaminated with an organic hazardous waste comprising the steps of:
- (a) contacting said solid material contaminated with the organic hazardous waste with an aqueous ammonia solution for a period of time effective to transfer at least a portion of said organic hazardous waste from the solid material to the aqueous ammonia solution;
- and
- (b) separating the aqueous ammonia solution containing the organic hazardous waste from the solid material.
