Abstract
Imidazole derivatives of formula I ##STR1## and the stereochemically isomeric forms thereof, and salts thereof, have useful herbicidal properties. The substituents R.sup.1, L and X have the meanings defined herein.

Imidazole derivatives of formula I ##STR25## the stereochemically isomeric forms thereof, and salts thereof, in which X is a radical of the formula ##STR26## R.sup.1 is hydrogen or --SH, and L is cyano, --COOH, --COOR.sup.8, --COSR.sup.8,--CONR.sup.9 R.sup.10, --CO--R.sup.11, --CH.sub.2 --O--R.sup.12 or a group ##STR27## Z is oxygen, sulfur, --SO--, or --SO.sub.2 -- each of R.sup.2 and R.sup.2, independently of the other, is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkenyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkynyl or together they form a spirocyclically linked C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkylene chain,
- each of R.sup.4 and R.sup.5, independently of the other, is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or together they form an oxo function,
- R.sup.6 is hydrogen, cyano, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkylthio or nitro,
- R.sup.7 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, halogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl,
- R.sup.8 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkoxyalkyl, benzyl, --CR.sup.15 R.sup.16 --C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkenyl or --CR.sup.15 R.sup.16 --C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkynyl,
- R.sup.9 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, phenyl, benzyl, --CR.sup.15 R.sup.16 --C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkenyl or --CR.sup.15 R.sup.16 --C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkynyl,
- R.sup.10 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, or
- R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 together with the nitrogen atom carrying them form a pyrrolidine, piperidine or morpholine radical,
- R.sup.11 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl, or phenyl that is unsubstituted or substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, nitro or by halogen,
- R.sup.12 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, phenyl that is unsubstituted or substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, halogen or by nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylcarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkylcarbonyl, or benzoyl that is unsubstituted or substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, halogen or by nitro,
- each of R.sup.15 and R.sup.16, independently of the other, is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl.
A herbicidal composition which contains an effective amount of a compound of formula I as defined in claim together with one or more carriers and/or adjuvants.
