Air conditioning apparatus for a building having an electrical grid operatively connected to receive electricity from a utility is disclosed. The apparatus includes compression refrigeration apparatus with an electric motor connected to drive a compressor, absorption refrigeration apparatus, a cogenerator, an air handler, induction mixing units, a system for circulating air to be conditioned through the air handler and then to said induction mixing units, apparatus for transferring heat from air in the air handler to ice, a heat transfer system connecting the absorption refrigeration apparatus to pump heat to a heat sink from air in the induction mixing units or from air in the air handler, electric circuitry connecting the electric motor of the compression refrigeration apparatus to the building electrical grid for energization, and a heat transfer system for transferring heat generated by the cogenerator into energizing relationship with the absorption refrigeration apparatus. The compression refrigeration apparatus is operable to make ice by pumping heat from water to a heat sink and to store the ice, while the cogenerator is operable to generate electricity and heat. The cogenerator is connected to provide electricity to the electrical grid of the building, and the induction mixing units include a fan for causing a flow of recirculated air from a space to be conditioned, and, when conditioned air is circulated thereto, for delivering to the space a mixture of conditioned air and recirculated air.
Air conditioning apparatus for a building having an electrical grid operatively connected to receive electricity from a utility, said apparatus comprising compression refrigeration apparatus including an electric motor operatively connected to drive a compressor, and being operable to make ice by pumping heat from water to a heat sink and to store such ice, absorption refrigeration apparatus, a cogenerator operable to generate electricity and heat, means for operably connecting said cogenerator to provide electricity to the electrical grid of the building, an air handler, a plurality of induction mixing units each of which includes means operable to cause a flow of recirculated air from a space to be conditioned, and, when conditioned air is circulated thereto, to deliver to the space a mixture of conditioned air and recirculated air, means for circulating air to be conditioned through said air handler and then to said induction mixing units, means for transferring heat from air in said air handler to ice which has been produced by said compression refrigeration apparatus, means operatively connecting said absorption refrigeration apparatus to pump heat to a heat sink from air in said induction mixing units or from air in said air handler, means operatively connecting the electric motor of said compression refrigeration apparatus to the building electrical grid for energization thereby, and means for transferring heat generated by said cogenerator into energizing relationship with said absorption refrigeration apparatus.
Air conditioning apparatus comprising a plurality of induction mixing units, means for dehumidifying air, said dehumidifying means comprising a coil, means for causing air to be dehumidified to flow in heat transfer relationship with said coil, and means for circulating a low temperature heat transfer fluid through said coil, said circulating means including means for transferring heat from the heat transfer fluid to stored ice, and means including compression refrigeration apparatus comprising a compressor, a condensor, an expander and means for transferring compressor heat to a heat sink for producing the stored ice, means for circulating dehumidified air to said induction mixing units, means operable to control its moisture content and temperature so that the dehumidified air is incapable, at the rate at which it is required for humidity control, of maintaining the desired space temperature at the maximum design cooling load, means operable to control the rate at which dehumidified air is delivered by each of said inductio mixing units to the space it serves, means operable to control the rate at which dehumidified air is delivered to said inductio mixing units so that dehumidified air is available at the rate required from time to time by each of said induction mixing units, means operable to cause a flow of recirculated air from the space to each of said induction mixing units, each of said induction mixing units being operable, when dehumidified air is delivered thereto, to deliver to the space it serves a mixture of dehumidified air and recirculated air, and means for transferring heat from recirculated air before it is returned to the space mixed with dehumidified air, said last-named means comprising said compression refrigeration apparatus.
Air conditioning apparatus comprising a first cooling coil, a second cooling coil, absorption refrigeration apparatus operably connected to transfer heat from said first cooling coil, an ice storage tank operably connected to transfer heat from said second cooling coil, means for causing air to flow first in heat transfer relationship with said first coil and then in heat transfer relationship with said second coil, and means responsive to the temperature of air leaving said first coil after heat transfer therewith, and operable to control the transfer of heat from said first coil to said absorption refrigeration apparatus to maintain the temperature of that air at a predetermined temperature.
An air conditioning system comprising compression refrigeration apparatus including a compressor, and being operable to make ice or chilled water by pumping heat from water to a heat sink and to store such ice or chilled water, absorption refrigeration apparatus, a heat engine operable to generate shaft work and heat, means for operably connecting said heat engine in driving relationship with the compressor of said compression refrigeration apparatus, an air handled, a plurality of air outlets, means for circulating air to be conditioned through said air handled, then to said air outlets and from said outlets to a plurality of spaces to be conditioned, means for transferring heat from air in said air handler to ice or chilled water which has been produced by said compression refrigeration apparatus, means operatively connecting said absorption refrigeration apparatus
Air conditioning apparatus comprising a plurality of air outlets each of which is operable to deliver air to a space to be conditioned, means including refrigeration apparatus operable to make ice by pumping heat from water to a heat sink and to store such ice, means for dehumidifying outside air or a mixture of outside air and return air, said dehumidifying means including a coil, means for causing air to be dehumidified to flow in heat transfer relationship with said coil, and means for circulating a low temperature heat transfer fluid through said coil, said circulating means including means for transferring heat from the heat transfer fluid to ice made and stored by said means operable to make and store ice, means for circulating dehumidified air to said air outlets to a rate per unit of area in the spaces served by said air outlets which varies between a predetermined minimum rate greater than zero and a maximum rate, the maximum rate being substantially less than that which would be required to maintain the design temperature in each of the spaces at the maximum design cooling load with air supplied to the space at a dry bulb temperature of 55.degree. F., means operable to control its moisture content and temperature so that the dehumidified air is incapable, at the rate at which it is required for humidity control, of maintaining the desired space temperature at the maximum design cooling load, means operable to control the rate at which dehumidified air is delivered by said air outlet to the spaces they serve to one not less than the predetermined minimum rate and higher than that minimum when required to maintain a monitored condition of the space within control limits.
