Abstract
Solvent-resistant resin blends, capable of being molded into parts which vary in properties relatively little over a wide range of molding conditions, are prepared from a polyphenylene ether, a linear polyester such as a poly(alkylene dicarboxylate), a mixture of a bisphenol A homopolycarbonate and block copolymer of a polyphenylene ether and a bisphenol A polycarbonate. Said blends preferably also contain at least one elastomeric polyphenylene ether-compatible impact modifier.
Claims6
A resinous composition comprising the following, all percentage proportions being by weight of total resinous components:
- (A) about 15-70% of at least one polyphenylene ether comprising structural units having the formula ##STR6## wherein in each of said units independently, each Q.sup.1 is independently halogen, primary or secondary lower alkyl, phenyl, haloalkyl, aminoalkyl, hydrocarbonoxy, or halohydrocarbonoxy wherein at least two carbon atoms separate the halogen and oxygen atoms;
- and each Q.sup.2 is independently hydrogen, halogen, primary or secondary lower alkyl, phenyl, haloalkyl, hydrocarbonoxy or halohydrocarbonoxy as defined for .sup.Q.sup.1 ;
- (B) about 20-80% of at least one poly(alkylene dicarboxylate);
- and
- (C) from 3% to about 50% of a mixture of:
- (C-1) a bisphenol A homopolycarbonate having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 30,000, as determined by gel permeation chromatography relative to polystyrene;
- and
- (C-2) a triblock copolymer having a weight average molecular weight in the range of about 10,000-100,000, in which the end blocks are polyphenylene ether blocks having a number average molecular weight in the range of about 2,000-20,000 and the midblock is a bisphenol A polycarbonate block;
- the weight ratio of component C-1 to component C-2 being in the range of about 0.3-3.0:1.
A resinous composition comprising the following, all percentage proportions being by weight of total resinous components:
- (A) about 15-70% of at least one polyphenylene ether comprising structural units having the formula ##STR7## wherein each of said units independently, each Q.sup.1 is independently halogen, primary or secondary lower alkyl, phenyl, haloalkyl, aminoalkyl, hydrocarbonoxy, or halohydrocarbonoxy wherein at least two carbon atoms separate the halogen and oxygen atoms;
- and each Q.sup.2 is independently hydrogen, halogen, primary or secondary lower alkyl, phenyl, haloalkyl, hydrocarbonoxy or halohydrocarbonoxy as defined for Q.sup.1 ;
- (B) about 20-80% of at least one poly(alkylene dicarboxylate);
- and
- (C) from 3% to about 50% of a mixture of:
- (C-I) a bisphenol A homopolycarbonate having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 30,000, as determined by gel permeation chromatography relative to polystyrene;
- and
- (C-2) a block copolymer having a weight average molecular weight in the range of about 10,000-100,000, prepared by an interfacial polycarbonate-forming reaction between bisphenol A and phosgene in the presence of a chain termination agent comprising a polyphenylene ether having a number average molecular weight in the range of about 2,000-20,000;
- the weight ratio of component C-1 to component C-2 being in the range of about 0.3-3.0:1.
