Abstract
Herein is described an ocular composition comprising an ocular decongestant such as phenylephrine and certain labdane derivatives which are intraocular pressure lowering agents. The composition not only markedly reduces the ocular reddening otherwise produced by such labdane compounds, but also unexpectedly prolongs and frequently potentiates their intraocular pressure lowering effect. Both of these effects are very beneficial to the use of such labdanes for the treatment of glaucoma.
Claims28
A synergistic intraocular pressure lowering composition for topical application comprising a suitable vehicle and effective hyperemia suppressing and intraocular pressure lowering amounts of an ocular decongestant and a compound having the formula ##STR11## wherein (a) R.sub.1 is --H, ##STR12## where R.sub.2 is hydrogen, loweralkyl, ##STR13## where m is 1, 2 or 3, R.sub.13 is loweralkyl, p is 0, 1, 2 or 3, R.sub.14, R.sub.15 and R.sub.16 are each independently hydrogen or loweralkyl;
- R.sub.3 is hydrogen, loweralkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.q OR.sub.17 or --CH.sub.2 CHOHCH.sub.2 OH, where q is 0, 2 or 3 and R.sub.17 is hydrogen or loweralkyl;
- R.sub.4 is hydrogen, loweralkyl or --(CH.sub.2).sub.r OH where r is 2 or 3, or alternatively --NR.sub.3 R.sub.4 as a whole is ##STR14## where n is 0, 1 or 2 and --X-- is ##STR15## --O--, --S--, --SO--, --SO.sub.2 --, ##STR16## R.sub.18 being hydrogen, loweralkyl, loweralkoxy or loweralkylcarbonyloxy, and R.sub.19 being loweralkyl;
- R.sub.5 is hydrogen, loweralkyl, benzyl or hydroxymethyl;
