Abstract
This invention provides compositions comprising a physiologically-active agent and a compound represented by the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals and cycloalkyl radicals comprising from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals and cycloalkyl radicals comprising from 1 to 30 carbon atoms; provided, however, that the total number of carbon atoms in said compound is 15 or more and the total number of carbon atoms in R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is 5 or more.
Claims14
A method for enhancing penetration of an effective amount of a pharmaceutically useful agent through the skin or mucosal membrane of a human or animal and for retaining said agent in the body tissues, said method comprising contacting said skin or mucosal membrane with an effective amount of said pharmaceutically useful agent in the presence of an effective non-toxic penetration enhancing amount of at least 0.0I% by weight of a compound having the structural formula:
- ##STR3## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl and cycoalkyl radicals comprising from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl and cycloalkyl radicals comprising from 1 to 30 carbon atoms;
- provided, however, that the total number of carbon atoms in said compound is 15 or more and the total number of carbon atoms in R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is 5 or more.
