Abstract
A method for enhancing the transdermal flux of a transdermally deliverable drug through intact skin is described in which the drug is delivered simultaneously with sucrose monolaurate or a mixture of sucrose esters of coconut fatty acids, which is predominatly sucrose monolaurate. Preferred embodiments of therapeutic systems for delivering the drug and the sucrose ester employ a matrix containing drug at a concentration above saturation.
Claims6
A device for the transdermal administration of a biologically active agent comprising, in combination:
- (a) a composition comprising a biologically active agent and a skin permeation enhancing amount of a material selected from the group consisting of sucrose monolaurate and mixtures of sucrose esters of coconut fatty acids which are predominantly sucrose monolaurate;
- (b) an occlusive backing behind the skin distal surface of said composition;
- and
- (c) means for maintaining said composition in agent and said material transferring relationship to intact skin.
In a device for the transdermal administration of a biologically active agent comprising:
- (a) a source of a transdermally deliverable biologically active agent;
- (b) a source of a skin permeation enhancer for said agent;
- and
- (c) means for maintaining said system in agent and permeation enhancer transferring relationship to intact skin;
- the improvement wherein said permeation enhancer consists essentially of a material selected from the group consisting of sucrose monolaurate and mixtures of coconut fatty acids which are predominantly sucrose monolaurate.
