Abstract
A process for electrochemically coupling anions of organic radicals to form multifunctional compounds having the general formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from --CN, CO.sub.2 Et, --R .sub.4 CH.sub.2 Et, --CO.sub.2 R.sub.4, and --COCH.sub.3 ; R.sub.3 is Br, H, or Et, and R.sub.4 is C.sub.1-12 alkyl; and the novel compounds per se.
Claims9
A process which comprises the electrochemical oxidation in a nitric solvent of a compound of the formula ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from --CN, --CO.sub.2 Et, --CO.sub.2 H, --R.sub.4 CO.sub.2 Et, --CO.sub.2 R.sub.4, and --COCH.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.3 is selected from H, Br, and Et;
- and R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 -.sub.12 alkyl to produce a compound of the general formula ##STR5## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 have the definition given above provided that each R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 group on the first central carbon atom of the product are the same as on the second central carbon atom and in which the anode is a non-porous graphite anode impregnated with an electrode binder pitch.
