Abstract
An improved heat transfer arrangement for use in a unique multi-function, industrial heat treat furnace which employs a sealed, closed end, heat exchanger shell member containing the work. The heat transfer arrangement includes a totally contained, internal recirculation system which develops an especially configured annular jet stream that produces highly efficient, convective heat transfer with the shell member. After heat transfer between the entrained gases in the jet stream with the shell member has occurred, the jet flow is reversed at one end of the shell and impinged against the workpiece, the spent stream being reformed into the annular jet at the opposite end of the shell member.
Claims7
A closed loop gas recirculation system contained substantially within an industrial heat treat furnace for effecting substantially convective heat transfer with a workpiece therein comprising:
- an imperforate cylindrical shell member with closed ends at a first temperature;
- said workpiece within said shell member at a second temperature;
- an atmosphere gas within said shell member at a third temperature;
- plenum means forming an annular orifice within and circumscribing said cylindrical shell member, said orifice having an annular opening of outside diameter less than the inside diameter of said shell member to define an annular underpressure space therebetween;
- and
- fan means recirculating said atmosphere gas and developing an annular atmosphere gas jet through said orifice travelling towards one end of said shell member to effect heat transfer of said atmosphere gas entrained within said jet with said shell member when said jet expands radially outwardly into contact with said shell member and thereafter to impinge said workpiece in heat transfer contact.
A closed loop gas recirculation system contained substantially within an industrial heat treat furnace for effecting substantially convective heat transfer with a workpiece therein comprising:
- an imperforate cylindrical shell member with closed ends at a first temperature;
- said workpiece within said shell member at a second temperature;
- an atmosphere gas within said shell member at a third temperature;
- an annular orifice positioned at one opposite end of said shell and having an outside diametrical distance less than the inside diameter of said shell member;
- and
- fan means for developing an annular gas jet through said orifice travelling substantially the length of said shell member towards the other end of said shell member to effect heat transfer of said gas entrained within said jet with said shell member when said jet expands by an underpressure zone between said orifice and said shell member into contact with said shell member as a stable annular jet stream having an essentially laminar flow of entrained gas at its outer diameter and a generally turbulent flow at its inner diameter to effect said heat transfer, said fan means further including a cylindrical shroud extending from said opposite end of and within said shell member, a circular baffle plate positioned at the axial end of said shroud, the diameter of the outer edge of said baffle plate being less than the inside diameter of said shroud to define said annular orifice, said baffle plate having a central opening within said baffle plate for receiving said redirected jet stream, and said opposite end and said baffle plate defining a plenum chamber contained therein, said fan means further including a radial fan having paddle blades disposed within said plenum chamber.
