Claims11
In a process for making alumina including the steps of digesting bauxite containing organic impurities in sodium hydroxide solution to form a solution containing sodium aluminate and organic impurities, precipitating aluminum hydroxide from said solution containing sodium aluminate and organic impurities to form at least one solution containing organic impurities, recycling at least one solution, containing organic impurities, formed by said precipitation of said aluminum hydroxide, to said digestion step, and calcining said precipitate of aluminum hydroxide to form alumina, the improvement of comprising contacting at least one of said solutions containing organic impurities with manganese dioxide in an amount effective to oxidize said organic impurities and so limit the accumulation of organic material in said process.
