2-substituted-1-naphthols, pharmaceutical compositions of, and their use as 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors

A compound having the formula:

• ##STR51## wherein R.sup.1 is H,
• R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are H, CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, CH.sub.3 O, or C.sub.2 H.sub.5 O;
• R.sup.4 is ##STR52## R.sup.7 is C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl, ##STR53## R.sup.9 is H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl;
• R.sup.12 and R.sup.13 independently are H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, or together are (CH.sub.2).sub.4-5 ;
• R.sup.14 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, OR.sup.9, O-phenyl, O-benzyl, CF.sub.3, Cl, Br, I, N(R.sup.12) (R.sup.13), or S(O).sub.w R.sup.9 where w is 0-2 with the proviso that if w is 1 then R.sup.9 is not H;
• and
• R.sup.15 and R.sup.16 are independently H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, OR.sup.9, O-benzyl, F or Cl;
• and
• R.sup.21 is H, subject to the following provisos:
• 1. if R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 are all H, then R.sup.4 is not 4-chlorophenylmethyl, or 4-methylphenylmethyl;
• and
• 2. if R.sup.2 or R.sup.3 is 6-OCH.sub.3, then R.sup.4 is not 4-chlorophenylmethyl or 4-methylphenylmethyl.
