Abstract
Regulation of eucaryotic gene expression is controlled by procaryotic peptides. The peptides recognize specific DNA sequences present in the gene, which may be derived from procaryotic genes, and either activate or repress gene transcription. Hybrid procaryotic peptides may be used containing both repressor and activator peptides.
Claims32
A method of regulating the expression of a gene in a eucaryotic cell, said method comprising:
- providing in said eucaryotic cell, a peptide, derived from or substantially similar to a peptide of a procaryotic cell able to bind to DNA upstream from or within said gene, the amount of said peptide being sufficient to bind to said gene and thereby control expression of said gene.
A hybrid gene comprising DNA encoding a specific DNA binding procaryotic peptide and DNA encoding a gene activating eucaryotic peptide, said gene activating peptide being effective to enhance transcription of adjacent DNA.
A eucaryotic cell comprising a peptide derived from or substantially similar to a peptide of a procaryotic cell able to bind to DNA upstream from or within said gene, and thereby control expression of said gene.
