Tetraphenyldithiolene complexes of the formula ##STR1## and novel asymmetrically substituted benzoins of the formula ##STR2## where X.sup.1, X.sup.2 and X have the meanings stated in the description and Me is nickel, palladium or platinum. The complexes have very high absorption in the range from 800 to 950 nm and are readily soluble in the plastics used for the production of optical recording materials. The recording materials produced using these complexes have a very high signal/noise ratio.
A tetraphenyldithiolene complex of the formula ##STR16## where one radical X.sup.1 and one radical X.sup.2 are each straight-chain or branched C.sub.5-30 alkyl in the 4-position, the other radical X.sup.1 and the other radical X.sup.2 are each fluorine, chlorine or bromine in the 2-, 3- or 4-position, and Me is nickel, palladium or platinum.
A tetraphenyldithiolene complex of the formula ##STR17## were one radical X.sup.1 and one radical X.sup.2 are each straight-chain or branched C.sub.14-30 alkyl in the 4-position, the other radical X.sup.1 and the other radical X.sup.2 are each hydrogen, C.sub.1-12 alkyl, C.sub.1-12 alkoxy, fluorine, chlorine or bromine in the 2-, 3-, 4-position, and Me is nickel, palladium or platinum.
