Abstract
An apparatus which binds a set of sheets by applying a tape having an adhesive thereon to the spine of the set of sheets. A heated plate is resiliently urged into contact with the tape with a force selected to optimize adhesive melt and flow.
Claims12
An apparatus for binding a set of sheets by applying a tape having adhesive thereon to the spine of the set of sheets, including:
- a heated member;
- means for detecting the thickness of the set of sheets;
- a spring operatively associated with said heated member;
- and
- means, responsive to said detecting means, for compressing said spring a distance dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets so that said spring presses said heated member against the tape with a force dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets to optimize adhesive melt and flow for binding.
An electrophotographic printing machine of the type in which successive copy sheets having indicia recorded thereon are compiled into sets and the sheets of each set are bound together by applying a tape having adhesive thereon to the spine of the set of sheets, wherein the improved binding apparatus includes:
- a heated member;
- means for detecting the thickness of the set of sheets;
- a spring operatively associated with said heated member;
- and
- means, responsive to said detecting means, for compressing said spring a distance dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets so that said spring presses said heated member against the tape with a force dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets to optimize adhesive melt and flow for binding.
