A plasmid naturally present in N. orientalis can be used as a vector for cloning or expression in Actinomycetales and to derive other vectors.

Plasmid pSO408, which is naturally present in N. orientalis strain NRRL 2452, isolated from such strain, or a functional mutant or genetically engineered derivative thereof wherein said mutant or derivative possesses sufficient amount of the replicon of pSO408 to permit stable autonomous replication.
