Abstract
The invention is related to a method of making paper or non-woven articles, comprising treating a substrate to render said substrate durably hydrophilic; and forming said durably hydrophilic fiber into a paper or non-woven article.
Claims39
A method of making paper or non-woven articles, comprising:
- (i) treating a fiber substrate to render said substrate durably hydrophilic, wherein said treating step comprises:
- (a) contacting said substrate with an aqueous mixture at a temperature between about 40.degree. C. and about 100.degree. C. containing an effective amount of a water-soluble cross-linking vinyl monomer and an effective amount of an organic hydrophobic carrier compound having a greater affinity for the substrate than the surrounding aqueous mixture, all non-aromatic carbon-carbon bonds of said carrier compound being saturated;
- and
- (b) thereafter initiating polymerization of said water-soluble cross-linking monomer to form a vinyl polymer on said substrate whereby the hydrophilic properties of said substrate are improved;
- and
- (ii) forming said durable hydrophilic substrate into a paper or non-woven article on papermaking equipment.
