A method for viscosifying a liquid hydrocarbon-based fracturing fluid is disclosed. The method comprises mixing together a liquid hydrocarbon, an acid, a phosphate composition and an aluminate activator. The phosphate composition comprises an organic phosphate ester selected from the group consisting of orthophosphate esters of the formulae ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl group containing one to about eight carbon atoms and R' is selected fromt the group consisting of alkyl groups containing about six to about eighteen carbon atoms, alkenyl groups containing about six to about eighteen carbon atoms and mixtures thereof. Hydrocarbon-based fracturing fluids prepared by such method, and methods of use of such fluids are also disclosed.
A method for viscosifying a liquid hydrocarbon-based fracturing fluid, comprising mixing together a liquid hydrocarbon, an acid, a phosphate composition and an aluminate activator, the phosphate composition comprising an organic phosphate ester selected from the group consisting of orthophosphate esters of the formulae ##STR5## wherein R is an alkyl group containing one to about eight carbon atoms and R' is selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups containing about six to about eighteen carbon atoms, alkenyl groups containing about six to about eighteen carbon atoms and mixtures thereof.
A hydrocarbon-based fracturing fluid having a viscosity at 300.degree. F. and 170 sec..sup.-1 of at least about 100 cps, and comprising a liquid hydrocarbon, an orthophosphate ester/aluminum complex and a salt selected from the group consisting of alkali metal sulfates, alkali metal nitrates and the reaction product of an alkali metal cation and an organic sulfonic acid having at most about 10 carbon atoms.
A method for fracturing underground wells comprising adding to an underground well a hydrocarbon-based fracturing fluid having a viscosity at 300.degree. F. and a shear rate of 170 sec..sup.-1 of at least about 100 cps and comprising a liquid hydrocarbon, an orthophosphate ester/aluminum complex and a salt selected from the group consisting of alkali metal sulfates, alkali metal nitrates and the reaction product of an alkali metal cation and an organic sulfonic acid having at most about 10 carbon atoms.
