N,N'-Bis(4-Azidobenzoyl) Cystine useful as photoaffinity labels.

A compound of the formula:
- ##STR4## wherein x is 1 or 2;
- y is 1 when x is 1 and y is zero when x is 2;
- R is H.sup.+ or monovalent cation which appended to the COO.sup.- group forms a water-soluble salt;
- and .sup.35 S signifies the radioactive sulfur isotope sulfur -35.
