Abstract
A rotary internal combustion engine has a housing with an elliptical inside surface surrounding an elliptical rotor forming with the housing combustion chambers. Valve and ignition assemblies connected to a source of air under pressure and injectors for introducing fuel into the air supply sequentially allows the air and fuel mixture to flow into the combustion chambers and ignite the air and fuel mixture therein. Vane and seal assemblies on the rotor and housing are controlled with cam and linkages to provide positive effective gas seals between the housing and rotor. A slack adjuster maintains lateral sealing relationships between the housing vane and seal assemblies and opposite side walls of the housing.
Claims13
A rotary valve assembly for an internal combustion engine having a housing with gas intake means, a gas expansion chamber and a bore connecting the gas intake means with the gas expansion chamber comprising:
- a sleeve locatable in said bore, means for securing the sleeve to the housing, said sleeve having an inlet port open to the gas intake means and an outlet port open to said gas expansion chamber, a rotatable valving member rotatably mounted within said sleeve, said valving member including a passage having an inlet aligned with the inlet port, an outlet aligned with the outlet port, and an end adjacent the outlet therein, said inlet and outlet of the passage extended laterally from the valving member in opposite directions whereby when the inlet is open to the inlet port, the outlet port is closed, and when the outlet is open to the outlet port, the inlet port is closed, said inlet and outlet ports being separately opened and closed during rotation of the valving member, a holder locatable in said bore, said holder having an end cooperating with the end of said valving member and open to said passage, means attaching the holder to the housing, means mounted on the end of said holder having spark generation means located in said passage operable to ignite an air and fuel mixture in the passage whereby the air and fuel mixture burns in said passage and continues to burn and expand in said gas expansion chamber.
A rotary valve assembly for an internal combustion engine having a housing with gas intake means, gas expansion chamber means, and a bore connecting the gas intake means with the gas expansion chamber means comprising:
- a sleeve locatable in said bore, means for securing the sleeve to the housing, said sleeve having an inlet port open to the gas intake means and an outlet port open to said gas expansion chamber means, rotary valving means rotatably mounted within said sleeve, said valving means including a rotatable valving member having a longitudinal passage an inlet aligned with the inlet port, outlet aligned with the outlet port, and an end adjacent the outlet therein, said inlet and outlet of the passage extended in diametrically opposite directions whereby when the inlet is open to the inlet port, the outlet port is closed, and when the outlet is open to the outlet port, the inlet port is closed, said inlet and outlet ports being sequentially opened and closed during rotation of the valving member to control the flow of gas to the gas expansion chamber means , holder means having an end cooperating with the end of the valving member, means attaching the holder means to the housing, and fuel ignition means mounted on the end of the holder and located in said passage operable to ignite an air and fuel mixture in the passage whereby the air and fuel mixture burns in said passage and continues to burn and expand in said gas expansion chamber.
A rotary valve assembly for an engine having a housing with gas intake means, gas expansion chamber means, and a bore connecting the gas intake means with the gas expansion chamber means comprising:
- rotatable valving means rotatably located within said bore, said valving means including a passage having an inlet aligned with the gas intake means for receiving gas an outlet aligned with the gas expansion chamber means for allowing gas to flow from said passage into said gas expansion chamber means, and an end with an opening in communication with said passage, said inlet and outlet of the passage extended in opposite directions whereby when the inlet is open to the gas intake means, the outlet is closed with respect to the gas expansion chamber means, and when the outet is open to the gas expansion chamber means, the inlet is closed with respect to the gas intake means, said inlet and outlet ports being sequentially opened and closed during rotation of the valving means to control the flow of gas into the gas expansion chamber means , holder means having an end cooperating with the end of the valving means and closing the opening therein, means attaching the holder means to the housing to locate the end of the valving member adjacent the end of the valving means, and fuel ignition means mounted on the end of the holder and located in said passage operable to ignite an air and fuel mixture in the passage whereby the air and fuel mixture burns in said passage and continues to burn and expand in said gas expansion chamber.
