Abstract
Shear stable antimisting properties are provided to a wide variety of formulations comprising aqueous liquids through the use of a viscoelastic surfactant which comprises a surfactant compound having a hydrophobic moiety chemically bonded to an ionic, hydrophilic moiety and an electrolyte having a moiety that is capable of associating with the surfactant ion. Optionally, an additional amount of electrolyte can be added to the viscoelastic surfactant to further reduce misting. The viscoelastic surfactant can also be a nonionic surfactant.
Claims17
A method for imparting shear stable antimisting properties to aqueous liquids in those processes where said liquids are employed in the form of controlled sprays, which method comprises adding to said aqueous liquid a functionally effective amount of a surfactant compound represented by the formula:
- R.sub.1 (Y.sup..sym.)X.sup..crclbar.
- wherein R.sub.1 is a hydrophobic moiety, Y.sup..sym. is a cationic solubilizing moiety chemically bonded to R.sub.1, and X.sup..crclbar. is a counterion capable of associating with Y.sup..crclbar. to form a viscoelastic surfactant and an electrolyte having a moiety that is capable of associating with the surfactant ion to form a viscoelastic surfactant.
A method for imparting shear stable antimisting properties to aqueous liquids in those processes where said liquids are employed in the form of controlled sprays, which method comprises adding to said aqueous liquid a functionally effective amount of (A) a surfactant compound represented by the formula:
- R.sub.1 (Y.sup..sym.)X.sup..crclbar.
- wherein R.sub.1 is a hydrophobic moiety, Y.sup..sym. is a cationic solubilizing moiety chemically bonded to R.sub.1, and X.sup..sym. is a counterion capable of associating with Y.sup..sym. to form a viscoelastic surfactant and (B) an electrolyte which can associate as the counterion with the surfactant ion to form a viscoelastic surfactant in an additional amount sufficient to further reduce the misting exhibited by said aqueous liquid.
