Abstract
A tuning system for tuning non-standard frequency RF television signals provided by cable distribution networks and television accessories conducts first and second consecutive searches by changing the local oscillator frequency. The first search is limited to search frequencies corresponding to predictable non-standard frequencies associated with the major cable distribution networks. The second search includes more search frequencies and extends over a wider frequency range than the first. During an auto-programming mode, in which active channels are identified, for memorization in a channel list portion of a memory, only the first search is conducted to minimize the required time.
Claims6
Tuning apparatus for a television channel comprising:
- an RF input for providing a plurality of RF signals corresponding to respective channels;
- each of said RF signals having a carrier with either a standard broadcast frequency or a non-standard frequency which may be offset from a respective one of said standard frequencies;
- some of said non-standard frequencies being predictable and others of said non-standard frequencies being unpredictable;
- RF means for providing one of said RF signals;
- local oscillator means generating a local oscillator signal having a frequency determined by a control signal;
- mixer means for combining said one RF signal and said local oscillator signal to produce at an output an IF signal having a carrier corresponding to said carrier of said one RF signal;
- detector means coupled to said output of said mixer means for generating an output signal indicating whether or not said carrier of said IF signal is present;
- channel selection means coupled to a control means for selecting channels to be tuned;
- and
- said control means being coupled to said detector means for generating said control signal for controlling the frequency of said local oscillator signal;
- for each channel that is selected, said control means being responsive to said output signal of said detector means for initially automatically causing the frequency of said local oscillator signal to change in first steps between frequencies in a first group of a first plurality of frequencies corresponding to said predictable frequencies and for thereafter automatically causing the frequency of said local oscillator signal to change in second steps between frequencies in a second group of a second plurality of frequencies which is greater than said first group and which extends over a larger frequency range.

- said control means limiting the frequency of said local oscillator signal to change in said first steps between said frequencies of first group during said programming mode.
