Abstract
Novel bacteria strains are described which are created by the introduction of DNA encoding for the production of chitinase, an enzyme capable of degrading chitin present in fungi and nematodes. The strains have utility in producing chitinase for the purpose of inhibiting plant pathogens.
Claims23
A method of introducing the capactiy to produce chitinase into a bacterial cell comprising introducing into the bacterial cell, or into a parent of the bacterial cell, a DNA sequence isolated from a heterologous source and encoding for chitinase activity, or a DNA sequence substantially homologous to said DNA sequence isolated from a heterologous source, wherein said bacterial cell is of the genus Pseudomonas.
A bacterial cell having chitinase activity resulting from introducing into the bacterial cell, or into a parent of the bacterial cell, a DNA sequence isolated from a heterologous source and encoding for chitinase activity or a DNA sequence substantially homologous to said DNA sequence isolated from a heterologous source, wherein said bacterial cell is of the genus Pseudomonas.
Pseudomonas putida strain #TSO44.
A plasmid comprising a DNA sequence isolated from P. Putida ATCC 39637 or E. coli ATCC 67152 and encoding for chitinase activity.
An essentially pure DNA sequence isolated from a source organism and encoding for chitinase activity, or an essentially pure DNA sequence substantially homologous to a DNA sequence isolated from a source organism and encoding for chitinase activity.
