A method of processing sets of data signals in a computer having a plurality of data storage means each capable of holding a set of data signals at sequentially ordered storage locations and capable of reading and writing concurrently for different storage locations, a plurality of operation means each for performing an arithmetic or logical operation on inputs provided sequentially thereto from one of said plurality of storage means and to sequentialy provide a set of dat signals corresponding to the results of the operation;
- connect means resonsive to applied program instructions for selectively connecting a first selected operation means to sequentially receive a set of operand data signals for first selected storage means and to provide a set of first result data signals to second selected storage means, said connect means being operable to connect the same time second selected operation means to receive the set of first result data signals from the second storage means and to provide a set of data signals from the second storage means and to provide a set of second result data signals to third selected storage means, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) sequentially reading out a set of data signals from storage locations of the first selected storage means according to a predetermined order of the storage locations to sequentially provide the read out set of data signals to said first selected operation means, wherein readout of each data signal is effected after detecting the presence of each data signal in the first selected storage means when each data signal is to be read next and the read out is postponed when the presence of a data signal is not detected;
- (b) performing an operation by said first operation means on said sequentially provided set of data signals, to sequentially provide the set of first result data signals to said second selected storage means in parallel to the receipt of new data signal inputs;
- (c) sequentially writing the set of first result data signals into storage locations within said second selected storage means according to said predetermined order of the storage locations and in response to receipt of respective result data signals;
- (d) sequentially reading the set of first result data signals from the storage locations within said second storage means according to said predetermined order of the storage locations and in an overlapping manner with the writing operation of the of first result data signals into said second storage means, with each one of the set of first result data signals being read after detecting that the respective first result data signal is already written into said second storage means;
- and
- (e) performing an operation by said second selected operation means on said read out set of first result data signals to sequentially provide the set of second result data signals to said third selected storage means.
