Abstract
Disclosed is a catalytic process for the production of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons from lower molecular weight hydrocarbons. More particularly, disclosed is a catalytic process for the conversion of methane to C.sub.2 + hydrocarbons, particularly hydrocarbons rich in ethylene or benzene, or both. The process utilizes a metal-containing catalyst, high reaction temperature of greater than 1000.degree. C., and a high gas hourly space velocity of greater than 3200 hr.sup.-1.

A process for the production of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons from lower molecular hydrocarbons comprising the steps of:
- (a) introducing into a reaction zone a lower molecular weight hydrocarbon-containing gas and contacting said gas in said zone with a metal compound-containing catalyst containing a carbide, nitride, boride or oxide of thorium under C.sub.2 + hydrocarbon synthesis conditions such that at least 15 mole percent of the lower molecular weight hydrocarbons in said gas are converted to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, said conditions including a temperature of greater than 1000.degree. C. and a gas hourly space velocity of greater than 6000 hr.sup.-1 ;
- (b) withdrawing from said reaction zone a higher molecular weight hydrocarbon-containing stream.
A process for the production of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons from methane comprising the steps of:
- (a) introducing into a reaction zone a methane-containing gas and contacting said gas in said zone with a catalyst containing a carbide, nitride, boride or oxide of thorium or under C.sub.2 + hydrocarbon synthesis conditions such that at least 20 mole percent of said methane in said gas is converted to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, said conditions including a temperature in the range of 1100.degree. to 1200.degree. C. and a gas hourly space velocity of 6,000 to 36,000 hr.sup.-1 ;
- and
- (b) withdrawing from said reaction zone a higher molecular weight hydrocarbon-containing stream, wherein the carbon-containing reaction products in said stream comprises greater than 90 mole percent higher molecular weight hydrocarbons.
A process for the production of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons from methane comprising the steps of:
- (a) introducing into a reaction zone a methane-containing gas and contacting said gas in said zone with a catalyst containing thorium oxide under C.sub.2 + hydrocarbon synthesis conditions such that at least 20 mole percent of said methane in said gas is converted to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, said conditions including a temperature in the range of 1100.degree. to 1200.degree. C. and a gas hourly space velocity of 6,000 to 36,000 hr.sup.-1 ;
- and
- (b) withdrawing from said reaction zone a higher molecular weight hydrocarbon-containing stream, wherein the carbon-containing reaction products in said stream comprises greater than 80 mole percent higher molecular weight hydrocarbons.
