Abstract
N-aryl-5,6,7-substituted-1,2,4,-triazolo-[1,5-a]pyrimidine-2-sulfonamides undergo oxidative ring cleavage to afford herbicidal substituted N-aryl-5-amino-1,2,4-triazole-3-sulfonamides. These triazolesulfonamides can undergo cyclizations with 1,3-dicarbonyls to form novel herbicidal substituted N-aryl-5,6,7-substituted-1,2,4-triazolo-[1,5-a]pyrimidine-2-sulfonamides.

A compound having the formula ##STR10## wherein Q is H or COX, X represents H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or phenyl, R.sup.1 through R.sup.5 individually represent H or from 1 to 3 substituents chosen from C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or halo substituted alkyl, halo, --NO.sub.2, --Ar, --OAr, --CF.sub.3, --OCF.sub.3, --OCF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 H, --OCF.sub.2 CCl.sub.2 H, --OCH.sub.2 CF.sub.3, --SO.sub.2 CF.sub.3, --SO.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 H, --SO.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CCl.sub.2 H, --SO.sub.2 R.sup.6, --COOR.sup.6, --CONH .sub.2, CONHR.sup.7, --CONR.sup.7 (R.sup.8), --SO.sub.3 R.sup.7, and --SO.sub.3 CH.sub.2 CF.sub.3, --SR.sup.6, --OR.sup.7, --CR.sup.6 R.sup.6 R6, and --NR6R6, wherein Ar represents substituted or unsubstituted phenyl or pyridyl wherein the substituents are haol, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl, R.sup.6 represents H, phenyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, and R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 individually represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl.
