Long conductors in a common cable which interconnect control pushbuttons to the basic control circuit for an electromagnetic contactor often have distributed capacitance between them. This distributed capacitance may conduct capacitive current from the power supply line to a parallel control line. This current interacts with high impedance in the control circuit for producing a voltage, or False signal, which may be of a magnitude which would otherwise be supplied by an ON pushbutton. In order to discriminate between a TRUE signal and a False signal the first capacitor is connected between the power supply conductor in system common and a second capacitor, larger than the first capacitor, is connected between a signal conductor and system common so that under normal circumstances the alternating voltage on the second conductor lags the alternating voltage on the first conductor by an amount .DELTA. except when the voltage on the second conductor is provided by the capacitive current between lines in which case the voltage on the second conductor will lead the voltage on the first conductor by an amount .gamma. due to the capacitive nature of the current. The microprocessor is conditioned to look at the two voltages immediately after the voltage on the first conductor changes state to determine if the signal is produced by a closed pushbutton or capacitive current.
In a circuit of the kind wherein an alternating source voltage is directly connected by way of a first conductor to a first input terminal of a microprocessor for reference and is connected to a second input terminal of said microprocessor through a controlled switch and then a second conductor for signal purposes, where the presence of said alternating source voltage at said second input terminal indicates that said controlled switch is closed, where the absence of said alternating source voltage at said second input terminal normally indicates that said controlled switch is opened, where capacitive coupling between said first conductor and said second conductor provides a path for current from said first conductor to said second conductor which reacts with circuit impedance which is interconnected with said second conductor to provide a false alternating source voltage signal at said second input terminal even when said controlled switch is opened, where said false alternating source voltage signal at said second input terminal electrically leads said alternating source voltage at said first input terminal due to the impedance of said capacitive coupling by an amount .gamma., apparatus for allowing said microprocessor to determine when the voltage on said second input terminal thereof is the result of said controlled switch being closed or when said voltage on said second input terminal thereof is the result of said false alternating source voltage signal, comprising:
A method for use with a circuit of the kind wherein an alternating source voltage is directly connected by way of a first conductor to a first input terminal of a microprocessor for reference and is connected to a second input terminal of said microprocessor through a controlled switch and then a second conductor for signal purposes, with the presence of said alternating source voltage at said second input terminal normally indicating that said controlled switch is closed and the absence of said alternating source voltage at said second input terminal normally indicating that said controlled switch is opened, where capacitive coupling between said first conductor and said second conductor provides a path for current from said first conductor to said second conductor which reacts with circuit impedance to provide a false alternating source voltage signal at said second input terminal even when said controlled switch is opened, which false voltage electrically leads said source voltage due to said capacitive coupling by an amount .gamma., where first capacitive means is connected between said first conductor and a system common, where second capacitive means is connected between said second conductor and system common, where the capacitance value of said first capacitive means is smaller than the capacitance value of said second capacitive means so that said voltage at said second input terminal lags said voltage at said first input terminal when said controlled switch is closed by an amount .DELTA. where .DELTA. is less than .gamma., the method being for determining the voltage on said second input terminal is the result of said controlled switch being closed or whether said voltage on said second input terminal is the result of said false voltage, comprising the steps of:
